A Celebration Beloved by Millions

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of India's most joyful and widely celebrated festivals. Every year, tens of millions of families across Maharashtra — and increasingly across the world — welcome Bappa into their homes with devotion, colour, and music. In Mumbai alone, over 1.5 lakh idols are immersed each year. Across Maharashtra, that number runs into millions. As the festival grows in scale and participation, so does its footprint on our rivers, lakes, and coastlines.

What Happens After Visarjan?

Many idols today are made from Plaster of Paris (PoP) — an industrially produced material adopted for its low cost and ease of moulding. PoP idols, along with chemical paints and synthetic decorations, do not dissolve in water. Instead they break apart and settle at the bottom of rivers and lakes, raising pH levels, depleting oxygen, and harming aquatic life. This is not a criticism of devotion — it is simply a consequence of materials that were never meant for water. The good news is that a beautiful, traditional alternative has always existed: natural clay, the same material our ancestors used for centuries.

Water Bodies

PoP raises pH and depletes oxygen in rivers and lakes after immersion.

Aquatic Life

Chemical paints and non-dissolving material harm fish and ecosystems.

Our Heritage

Clay idols are the original tradition — eco-friendly is going back to roots.

Governments Are Taking Notice

Recognising the environmental impact, the Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution (GR) directing municipal corporations and gram panchayats to discourage PoP idol production and promote eco-friendly alternatives. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has also issued directives restricting the immersion of PoP idols in natural water bodies. Several districts have introduced incentives for artisans switching to clay, and awareness campaigns now run alongside the festival each year. These steps reflect a growing consensus: our rivers deserve the same reverence as our traditions.

Maharashtra Government Resolution

Municipal corporations and gram panchayats have been directed to actively discourage Plaster of Paris idol production and promote clay-based, eco-friendly alternatives across the state.

Our Answer: Back to Clay

Bappa Eco Idols was born from a simple belief — that devotion and responsibility can coexist beautifully. Our idols are handcrafted by skilled artisans in Satara using natural clay and decorated with plant-based, non-toxic colours. They dissolve completely in 2 to 3 hours after visarjan, returning to the earth without a trace. When you bring home a Bappa Eco Idol, you are not making a compromise — you are making a choice that honours both your faith and the world your children will inherit.
